CUZCO: THE NAVEL OF THE WORLD

Cuzco is known as “The Archaeological Capital of the Americas”. This beauty city is located at 3,399 m.a.s.l. Since the arrival of the Spanish Cuzco has become a city of contrasts. Where splendid colonial buildings were erected on the foundations of an impressive Inca architecture noted for its fine masonry and perfect fit between each stone.

No only architecture but also painting and sculpture were enriched by the mixture of cultures, giving rise to the so-called "Cuzco school" of art, noteworthy for its representations of Catholic themes with clear indigenous elements, thus demonstrating the superimposition of one religion over another.

While most ruins are just outside of the city, the main ruin within is that of the Coricancha, once the Inca Empire's richest temple. Today the ruin forms the base of the colonial church of Santo Domingo. The nearest archaeological sites are Sacsayhuaman (an impressive example of Inca military architecture), Qenqo, Puca Pucara & Tambomachay. Machu Picchu, located 120 Km northwest of Cuzco high above the Urubamba Valley, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is one of the world's most important archaeological sites and Peru's premier tourist attractions.
